The ability to choose whether, when, and how many children to have can change a woman’s life far beyond pregnancy itself. Reliable contraception supports education, career goals, financial stability, physical health, mental peace, and even the well-being of children you already have.

Hormonal Methods

Combined pill, patch or ring: These work mainly by stopping ovulation and keeping your cycle predictable. Many women also notice lighter, less painful periods. Not ideal for smokers over 35 or those with clot-risk factors.
Progestogen-only pill (mini-pill): An oestrogen-free option that suits many breastfeeding women and those advised to avoid combined hormones. Timing matters more here, and some spotting or irregular bleeding can happen, especially early on.
Injection (3-monthly): It’s convenient and can provide 12-13 weeks of protection per injection. However, it can bring irregular bleeding, weight changes for some, and a slower return to fertility after stopping.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)

Implant (3–5 years): A small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm that quietly does its job for years. It’s one of the most reliable reversible methods. Irregular bleeding is the most common issue early on.
Copper IUD (5–10 years): Hormone-free, long-lasting, and can also work as emergency contraception. Periods may become heavier or crampier.
Hormonal IUD (3–8 years): Releases progestogen mainly within the uterus; often significantly reduces bleeding and may stop periods. Some women notice mild hormonal side effects.

Barrier Methods

Condoms (male/female): The only contraceptive option that also protects against STIs. No hormones, no long-term commitment, just consistent, correct use every time.
Diaphragm/Cervical cap: Reusable internal barriers inserted before intercourse. They work best when fitted properly and used correctly.

Fertility Awareness

Cycle tracking methods: These rely on spotting fertile days and avoiding unprotected sex during that window. They can work well for disciplined couples, but they’re less forgiving if cycles are irregular or tracking is inconsistent.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency pills: Useful backup when protection fails or wasn’t used, most effective the sooner you take them. They’re a safety net, not a regular method.
Copper IUD (within 5 days): The most effective emergency option, and then continues as an ongoing contraception.

Permanent Options

Tubal ligation (female sterilisation) and vasectomy (male sterilisation) are intended to be permanent, though reversal is sometimes possible. They’re appropriate for people certain they don’t want future pregnancies.
